Spirent Collaborates with TIP Community to Boost Open RAN in Indonesia

By :

As a technology partner contributing to the TIP project, Spirent’s O-RAN O-CU Test Solution feature-set supports validation needs for the evolution path to 5G.

Indonesia is Southeast Asia’s largest economy, covering around 48% of the region’s 600 million population. Despite the rollout of 3G and 4G networks by mobile operators, about 61 million Indonesians currently don’t have access to the Internet, according to the GSMA.

Network deployment in Indonesia can be challenging due to the vast and varied landscapes. Mobile operators in Indonesia needed to test and trial Open RAN technology to determine whether open and other elements of the disaggregated ecosystem could play a part in plans to take mobile broadband connectivity to thousands of rural villages in the expansive country.

The TIP Community Lab at Telkom University, Indonesia, aims to build a local ecosystem that can support the development and implementation of innovative and cost-effective platforms for Indonesian operators. Most open network technologies, products, and solutions are still in the development or trial phase, but once the hardware and the software are disaggregated and components made interchangeable rather than just interoperable, Open RAN will be an appealing option for Indonesia. The impact on both the consumer and the enterprise offerings that the operators have, due to the flexibility of Open RAN will be significant.

A technology partnership

Spirent is proud to participate in this year’s TIP On event organised by Telecom Infra Project (TIP) and Telkom University in Indonesia. As a technology partner contributing to the TIP project, Spirent’s O-RAN O-CU Test Solution feature set supports validation needs for the evolution path to 5G.

The Spirent O-CU Test Solution has been deployed to function as clients for an O-RAN CU or to emulate the CU as needed. It can also be used for wraparound testing to validate an O-CU for both compliance and performance at the TIP Community Labs.

In addition, Spirent’s automation of test cases in the lab helps to drive efficiency and emulate real-world conditions to resolve issues faster. It enables multiple labs to consolidate into a single, web-accessible resource relying on automation to accelerate testing, reduce manual effort, and maximize equipment utilization.

Results

Incorporating industry-leading features and capabilities, Spirent’s O-CU Test Solution can help the TIP Community Lab provide end-to-end testing for O-RAN integration to the mobile core. Together with Spirent’s lab and test automation solutions, it yields significant benefits such as reducing capital and operational expenditure and accelerating time to market for new products and services by expanding testing capacity and optimizing team productivity.
